Results of Our Coming Out Thus Far!

So this whole idea of coming out undocumented as a community officially launched last Wednesday, and I’m sure you’re wondering how things are going so far. Walter Lara is No Longer in Deportation!

“I’m not being deported!”

Today Walter got a stay for one year from Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, who is also a long-time supporter of the DREAM Act.

From the Orlando Sentinel:

“I am just thrilled,” said Lara, speaking shortly after he found out of the reprieve. “I feel relieved that I have more time, but I feel the problem hasn’t been fully solved. There are many other people in the same situation.”
[...]
“This July 4th,” Lara said, “is going to be always in my mind as the day I got to stay and got to fight for my independence.”

This is certainly a victory for online advocacy. We would like to thank everyone who helped on this campaign and supported Walter.

The work doesn’t stop here. Countless other students are still in limbo, still not free from the threat of getting detained and deported. DHS should certainly put a stay on deportation of all DREAM Act students till we can pass the DREAM Act and other forms of immigration reform.D
