Some updates from Students Working for Equal Rights (S.W.E.R.) in South Florida.

Hello friends, allies, and fellow DREAMers!
Probably like many of you nationwide, our summer has been quite overwhelming (but productive nonetheless). From the Reform Immigration for America (RI4A) campaign launch in early June to the STOP Walter Lara’s deportation campaign and the DREAM Act graduation in D.C., SWER has not stopped for a second… and we won’t stop until we see that our DREAMs are fulfilled.

As a matter of fact, we are currently working on a proposal to launch a campaign that will put a halt to the deportation of all DREAM Act beneficiaries –we cherish education NOT deportations!

Moreover, we will continue to work on access to education issues and plan for the fall (summer is a great time to plan for the upcoming semester!).

Just recently, this past Saturday, August 1st, we were part of a DREAM Act forum orchestrated by our close friends and allies at the Palm Beach County Coalition for Immigrant Rights (PBCCIR). Let me just start by saying that there were people of all different colors, sexual orientations, and even age groups. And having such diversity is, without doubt, a beautiful sight. There were some that were unaware of the dire situation DREAMers are in. Others knew full well of our predicament. But by the end of the forum, they were ALL irritated at the injustices of current law, and wanted to do something about it. Which is obviously a win, since both Palm Beach country Reps, namely, Wexler and Hastings, have yet to co-sponsor the DREAM Act…tsk-tsk.

Speaking of legislators, Rep Corrine Brown just recently co-sponsored the DREAM Act, making her the 9th legislator to co-sponsor the DREAM Act in Florida.

PS: I’d also like to add that we had previously underestimated how well car washes work for fundraising – give it a try! (Disclaimer: it might only work in south Florida and under certain conditions and if certain variables are satisfied) :p
