Trouble for Undocumented Students in Utah

Effective on July 1, the disastrous SB 81 and HB 64 “require an applicant for a state or local public benefit to certify the applicant’s lawful presence in the United States” but it does not affect the instate-tuition provisions laid out in HB 144.
However, the University of Utah is taking regressive steps, eliminating even private scholarships for undocumented students.

SB81 requires that local law enforcement officials make a reasonable effort to determine the immigration status of anyone for a felony or for a DUI. Religious leaders lament the bill and Salt Lake City officials have said that they would not enforce the bill.
