Results of Our Coming Out Thus Far!

So this whole idea of coming out undocumented as a community officially launched last Wednesday, and I’m sure you’re wondering how things are going so far. Maybe you’d like to see what’s been done and get some ideas. Perhaps you’d like some inspiration or need a little push to motivate you. Or maybe you just think all DREAMers are awesome and would like any excuse to read about them, especially when they end up in the New York Times. If any of these apply to you, then keep on reading!

Trail of DREAMs and Fasting: Florida’s Escalation

They keep telling us to wait.  But we can’t wait.  We won’t wait.  We can’t afford to lose another human to an unjust law that shatters his dreams and scars his wrists.  Just two weeks ago, we were able to halt (yet again) the deportation of two outstanding students and leaders in our community, the Reyes brothers – but countless others have fallen through the cracks of the (too many) holes that exist in the colander that is our immigration system.

We can’t afford to lose another classmate, father, mother, uncle, aunt, son, daughter, lover, friend, to a system that disappears people over night and leaves our community in agony and despair.  We can’t afford to live in fear anymore and be frozen by the antagonizing ICE. This year, our new year’s resolutions to the Obama administration and Congress will not be “asks,” but rather, demands
On January 1st a team of dedicated leaders and passionate individuals from Students Working for Equal Rights (S.W.E.R.) will depart from Miami’s “Freedom Tower” to commence their four-month “Trail of DREAMs” walk to Washington D.C., passing through St. Augustine, Florida, a battleground for the civil rights movement, and numerous other key cities and locations, thus escalating the movement for reform with non-violent direct action. We will share our stories, our experiences, our agonies, our dreams, with all of those that will listen in the 2000 mile trail, uniting ALL of those human beings that want the change we were promised delivered NOW.

WE DEMAND that our President, Barack Obama stop the separation of families and deportation of DREAMers.

WE SUPPORT just and humane immigration reform that includes equal access to education, an end to the separation of families, worker’s rights, and a pathway to citizenship.

In solidarity with the “Trail of DREAMs,” another team of brave and dedicated individuals (farm workers in ankle bracelets whose families have been devastated and children left parent-less by our broken system) will hold a sustained fast in an astounding effort to increase the much needed urgency for the passage of fair and humane immigration reform our families are in desperate need of.

We are ready to escalate and make our DREAMs a reality. Are you? What’s your “Trail of DREAMs”?
