Stonewall Young Democrats of LA Endorse Dream Act

Letter can be found here (PDF)

In support of the passage of the Federal DREAM Act to grant legal status to
deserving students who have been educated in the United States and who wish to become U.S. citizens.

WHEREAS, Stonewall Young Democrats is dedicated to represent and mobilize the LGBTQA youth within the democratic party and understands the need to advocate for issues affecting youth; and,

WHEREAS, under the DREAM Act, most students of good moral character who came to the U.S. before they were sixteen years old and at least five years before the date of the bill’s enactment, would be granted a temporary legal residency, and could earn permanent resident status and work toward citizenship; and,

WHEREAS, we recognize that many undocumented children consider the United States their home and will remain here even though they do not have legal immigration status and we will not ignore the troubles of undocumented gay students in the United States; and,

WHEREAS, Stonewall Young Democrats understands that gay rights and immigration rights are interconnected as we fight for justice, equality and dignity for all. We also recognize that there are youth who identify within the LGBTQA community and feel isolation as they have to confront homophobia in their immigrant families and are encountered with the widespread discriminatory United States immigration laws in the lives of the LGBTQA community; and,

WHEREAS, undocumented children, if provided legal status, could make significant contributions as teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers and trained professionals in other occupations.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, Stonewall Young Democrats of Los Angeles strongly supports policies such as the DREAM Act and stands in strong solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters in the historic battle of our time for equality and justice. Stonewall Young Democrats calls on members of the United States Congress and Senate to pass the DREAM Act and for President Barack Obama to sign the DREAM Act.

Sincerely,

Shawn Amsler, President and Ari Ruiz, Political Vice President

This is off topic, and I don't mean this in any offensive way, but I laughed out loud when I saw " LGBTQA". Is that currently the official acronym? The last time I checked it had like an extra "Q" and a question mark in it as well or something. The fact that it seems to change frequently should be a testiment to the fact that human sexuality is more fluid and varied than people like to assume.
