Statement on Christian Right-Wing Support for Immigration Reform

DreamActivists across the country are proud to support all families, including LGBT families, in the fight for immigration reform.

For Immediate Release

We welcome support from everyone who believes in the dignity and basic right of all immigrant families to be together. It is disappointing however, that at a moment when the need for immigration reform is so urgent, the National Immigration Forum has turned to Focus on the Family, despite its long history of advocating divisive views that leave some families behind.

Poll after poll shows that young people, including young people of faith, support inclusiveness in our communities, our churches and our families. Undocumented youth come from diverse backgrounds and include young people who are people of faith as well as young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. We are closer than ever to winning the battle to keep all our families together. Focus on the Family is out of step with that ideal.

Focus on the Family is not an evangelical church. The SPLC reports that the organization uses its vast resources to battle against LGBT rights, women’s rights and sex education. It provides millions in funding for the SPLC-designated hate group, the Family Research Council, which has compared gays to “abnormal cells” to say the least. Besides spearheading the fight against marriage equality on several occasions, members of Focus on the Family hold that gays and lesbians are not fit to be parents, and have gone as far as to advocate “conversion therapy” as a way to deal with LGBT teen suicides and eliminate queers. By aligning itself with this viewpoint, the Forum is sending a message that exclusion and anything less than equal rights for LGBT families is tolerable.

Many leaders in the movement for immigrant rights are openly queer. We want all of us and all families to be respected and included in the movement for fair and comprehensive immigration reform. Focus on the Family and the Forum must declare its intent to include us all.
