Meet Luis Villanueva, he has been living here for the past 6-years, the first five of which were in New York and the last year in Florida, at the Broward Detention Center. In 2010 Luis’ father was killed in Oaxaca, Mexico, he was shot 4 times and left for dead. Luis thought him and his family were safe until those responsible made death threats against him and his two children, 3 and 6 years old.
Call These Day Laborer Advocates: “Luis Was Profiled, Stop His Deportation!”
In October of 2011 Luis and his family fled New York and moved to Miami where they lived for a month before Luis was detained. On November 8, 2011, Luis was harassed by a police officer and, without warning, arrested as he sat outside a Home Depot looking for work, a 1st Amendment right. Luis spent 7-days in jail before his charges were withdrawn by the prosecutor, instead of immediately being released Luis was detained by ICE.
CALL Rep. Lofgren and ask that she STOP THIS LOW-PRIORITY DEPORTATION
Luis has now been detained for 9 months. He’s been living longer in detention in Florida than with his family! Despite no criminal record Luis was denied a bond. Luis filed for asylum because of the death threats; his case was denied and he was ordered deported. Luis is set to be removed on Monday morning and he fears for his life.
TAKE ACTION: MAKE 3 CALLS
“Hi, I was calling to ask that the member take immediate action to stop the deportation of Luis Villanueva (A#201-298-270). Luis was picked up as a day laborer in front of Home Depot. He has never been convicted of a crime. His charges were dropped but ICE detained him and has had him for 9 months now. He is detained in Florida at the Broward Detention Center and is told he will be deported on Monday. Why won’t the member help?”
Optional Talking Points:
** I know the member is supportive of day laborer rights.
** Luis is a low-priority case under the June 2011 Morton Memo
