University of Pennsylvania President Supports the DREAM Act!

February 12, 2010 in News Article, Senator Specter, University Support by Maria

upenn presOver the past year or so, we have heard of several university presidents coming out in support of the DREAM Act. This couldn’t have been possible without the great activism from many students at each of these campuses. These students have organized and have brought awareness about this important issue to students and faculty who had no idea of the obstacles undocumented students have to endure in order to remain in this country.

A few days ago, University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann joined other university presidents in publicly showing her support for the DREAM Act. As I said before, this wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing work from MEChA de Penn and the Latino Coalition. They have held several events in order to educate other students, they have collected postcards, and they have written to their school president about supporting this piece of legislation. Special thanks to MEChA de Penn president Laura Trujillo for working so hard on this!

Ms. Gutmann sent her letter of support to Sen. Arlen Specter, Rep. Robert Brady, Rep. Chaka Fattah and Rep. Allyson Schwartz. This is great news since only Sen. Specter and Rep. Fattah have co-sponsored the bill. In her letter, Gutmann writes:

“While the issue of immigration is controversial, educating more young people through the passage of the DREAM Act will promise to make our nation stronger and our future brighter by enabling our youth to reach their fullest potential,”- The Daily Pennsylvanian

So what’s next for UPenn when it comes to the DREAM Act?

The next step is a campus-wide letter-writing campaign, according to Trujillo.

“We’ve helped to spread the word, but there’s still so many people who don’t know,” she said about the DREAM Act. “And that’s something we definitely want to change,” Trujillo added. – The Daily Pennsylvanian

Keep up the awesome work, guys!!
