ANNOUNCEMENT: United We Dream gathers in Minneapolis

February 5, 2010 in News Article by Matias Ramos

The long term goal is 50 States, 1 Dream. United We Dream.

This weekend, 46 DREAM Act student leaders from 15 states and Washington, DC are traveling to Minnesota to reflect on ten years of DREAM Act activism and look forward to the next ten years of fighting for immigrant rights. While the Dream Act did not come into law in the first year of Obama’s administration and the promise of Comprehensive Immigration Reform continues to be delayed, there is a growing optimism about the potential of immigrant youth to lead the way in building a movement for immigrant rights.

United We Dream (UWD) has existed as a loose coalition for many years, and students decided to build it into its own organization in July of 2009. Since then, UWD has hired its first staff person and worked to solidify as a network of immigrant youth.

The UWD Field Strategy meeting is hosted by the Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network and will be attended by leaders from United We Dream Network, Dream Team Los Angeles (California), University Leadership Initiative (Texas), Students Working for Equal Rights (Florida), DreamActivist.org, Student Immigrant Movement (Massachusetts), New York State Youth Leadership Council, Texas Dream Act Alliance, Immigrant Youth Justice League (Illinois), Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network, NAKASEC, Korean Resource and Cultural Center, Dream Act OK (Oklahoma), National Immigration Law Center, Latino Youth Collective (Indiana), Voces de la Frontera (Wisconsin), Missouri/Kansas Dream Act Alliance, Center for Community Change, New Jersey Dream Act Coalition, Arkansas Dream Students, and One Michigan.

Our goals are to solidify the agenda of the immigrant youth movement, create stronger relationships among organizations fighting for the same cause, and strategize for our fight for immigrant rights and access to legal status for immigrant youth. Our dream is stronger local and state organizations, as well as larger convenings with hundreds of DREAM leaders.

Keep us in your prayers, send us your good energy, and join us in the week of action. United We Dream!
