As January ends, the Trail of Dreams is well underway as they approach mid Florida with a line up of events to bring awareness to their cause.
The walkers will spend their Martin Luther King holiday in St. Augustine, Florida in which they will issue personal statements followed by a speaker from the University of Washington. The event will take place at the following location:
| Date: Monday, January 18, 2010
Time: 4:00pm – 5:45pm Location: Plaza de la Constitution (28 King Street, St. Augustine) |
Stops like these are significant for this project, which as mentioned is being carried out by FLIC and SWER, since these are opportunities for these students to be able to speak to the communities about their stories, what they are doing, and how they are representing all of those out there who do not have a voice of their own. Truly, a testament to the legacy left by Dr. King as he hoped to bring down barriers and build bridges so that communities would not be separated, and yet understand the struggles and injustice suffered by many out there in this great nation.
Following the event in St. Augustine, the Trail of Dreams will be heading to Orlando land of Disney World and home of the Golden Knights. They will be stopping at the University of Central Florida in which they will be meeting with several students in order to support a resolution for the Federal DREAM Act which is to be introduced and debated on within the Student Government of said institution.
Please be sure to check out their snazzy new website which was redone by Presente.org
Additionally, it has been brought up to my attention that the project is in monetary donations. While I am not trying to distract you from also donating to relief efforts in Haiti, please be sure to throw some dollars here to support the walkers here.
If you’re an Orlando resident, a UCF student, or a supporter that is willing to support this project please drop me a comment. For any information, and news coverage I urge all of you to look into Twitter under this hashtag #todreams where updates are constantly posted.
Keep in mind that this is an ongoing project so updates will be posted regularly until they are able to make it to Washington DC on May 1st.
