Nevada Dreamers: Deadline near for organizing training

December 3, 2009 in Student Activism by Matias Ramos

Nevada Dreamers: The deadline to apply for the Movement Building Training in Las Vegas is this Monday! From the CCC website:

Do you think you’re a leader?
Are you interested in organizing?
Do you want to help fix our nation’s broken immigration system?
Then join us at the MOVEMENT BUILDING TRAINING FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM!

The trainings are designed to:

• Teach basic organizing skills.

• Help participants learn to tell their own stories and speak in public.

• Train participants in the use of social media tools for outreach and organizing.

• Provide an insider’s overview of the immigration debate.

• Build leadership teams of five to six people in a geographic area.

• Conduct a brief action (e.g. public event, media activity) to give participants a chance to practice newly learned skills.

The ultimate goal of the trainings is to prepare a trained, enthusiastic leadership force to help win comprehensive and humane immigration reform in 2010!

Sponsors: The trainings are a collaboration between the Campaign for Community Change; the Center for Community Change and the Fair Immigrant Rights Movement (FIRM); Reform Immigration for America; United We Dream; the New Organizing Institute; and other allied organizations in each of the six host states.

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the training in Washington, DC. It was really one of the most exciting and empowering weekends in a really long time. It has been a long time coming for us to create the right connection between grassroots organizing and our legislative advocacy — and these trainings are a step in the right direction. If you don’t believe me, check out video from the Colorado training:

There will also be trainings in California, New York, and Ohio in January – as well as UWD-led convenings elsewhere (to be announced).
