More Hypocrisy from the Right – Senator Gordon Smith

United States Senator Gordon Smith has continuously flip flopped on immigration related laws, at first he voted for comprehensive immigration reform. After the first measure failed and an updated bill was introduced he voted against the measure. Later in 2007 when the Dream Act came up for a vote he voted against it.

However, it turns out, like many of our republican leaders, Senator Smith believes in the “Do as I say, not as I do” policy. He believed in E-Verify so much that he voted for three times, but when it comes to actually implementing it in the food processing plant he owns it is a big no no.

In Congress, Smith has voted three times to fund the E-Verify program. He told The Oregonian: “If it’s reliable, it should be used. If it is reliable, I would tell my company to use it.”

Why doesn’t Smith Foods use it?

His campaign spokeswoman, Lindsay Gilbride, said that although Smith has repeatedly voted to fund the system, it remains a “slowly improving program that someday may be a solution.”

Mike Lesko, who oversees hiring for Smith Foods, adds: “There’s no reason for us to be using it. It’s not accurate.”

Maybe it is time for Smith to admit he was wrong for voting for E-verify when he full well knows it is not something that will work.
