American DREAMer: Sam

With so many undocumented high school students filling out school applications and finding out about their undocumented status when they did not have the required nine-digit social security number, Sam has a story that is all too familiar.

He is an award-winning saxophonist from Indiana who just began school at a college to study music and his story, told through words and music, tells of the typical undocumented student struggle after graduation from high school.

Part 1 has Sam telling about his last few weeks of college and concludes as he struggles to figure out how to pay for first semester of college.

Part 2 follows Sam as he realizes how hard it might get in college without having a job, financial assistance, and even driver’s license.

Sam has played at the College Board Annual Forum and he was also featured on Latino in USA, an NPR program last week.

We hope to get more installations and updates from Sam soon. In the meantime, look out for an airing of American DREAMer on All Things Considered and watch this space.
