Liliana

I arrived to this country when i was 7 with my mother, who was pregnant with sister and my step father, who already resided in Las Cruces and is a permanent resident up to this day. My family is now made up of my mother, who is the only provider for her three children, Luisa who is nine, Manuel who is two and me. My mother is hard-working woman who has seen the face of domestic violence and was strong enough to stop it before if affected her children. This is the reason why my step father no longer is part of the family. My step father brought to this country to the excuse for a better life, he only abused the fact that me and my mother were undocumented. Now that he is gone we feel peace but we are faced with a hard reality. Neither my mother nor I can obtain a job in the United states because we are undocumented. She supports her children by being a child care provider of five children from two different families. Unfortunately, her salary is not enough to provide money for my college education and I do not qualify for aid. I have been collecting and saving money for my college education by cleaning yards, babysitting, and cleaning houses but still that is not enough. Even though fact that i am undocumented is a great barrier in my life, it has not stopped me from trying to go to college or has it taken away my hopes of some day being able to achieve my dreams. If I returned to Mexico I could not make a life there. I grew up in the U.S. and I love this country. Through out my High School career I have gotten good grades and I even was one out of nine students in my state to participate in a Legislative Internship. I have worked hard to get into a good college but now I am being kept to reaching my dream just like many others.
